イン・ポライト・カンヴァセーション：礼儀正しい会話で ー社会的実践：アメリカの現代美術ー

小海町高原美術館では、「イン・ポライト・カンヴァセーション：礼儀正しい会話でー社会的実践：アメリカの現代美術ー」を開催します。本展では、カリフォルニア州オーシャンサイドに住み、活動している2人の現代アーティスト、アリソン・ボードリーとヨシミ・ハヤシの作品を展示します。彼らは、国境問題、メンタルヘルス、環境、女性の権利など、さまざまな論点の作品を制作しています。この展覧会は、写真、映像、彫刻、インスタレーションアートを通じて、「どうすればアートはセンシティブな社会的/政治的な話題を明るみに出し、会話を生み出すことができるだろうか。」を問うものです。 多くの社会では、難しい、あるいはデリケートな問題とみなされる主題には、 「無礼」 というレッテルが貼られ、敬遠されます。問題を無視することは感情の増幅につながり、最終的には強い偏見や、様々な権利を剥奪された人々にとって有害な行動に繋がります。これらのプロセスは、1つの出来事からではなく、時間の経過とともに徐々に潜行的に発生します。「社会的実践」 アートは、そのようなトピックをプロセスに含めることで、対話を生み出し、困難な社会的主題の二極化を改善することを提唱しています。環境、移住と国境、メンタルヘルス、フェミニズムの文脈を通して、アートは私たち全員の意識を高め、より良い世界を作るための強力なツールになるでしょう。

In Polite Conversation is an exhibition that features the works of two contemporary artists, Yoshimi Hayashi and Allison Beaudry, who live and work in Oceanside, California. These artists create issue-based work that address subjects ranging from border issues, mental health, the environment, and women’s rights. Through photo, video, sculpture, and installation art, this exhibition asks, “How can art bring sensitive social/political topics to light and create a conversation?”

In many societies, subjects deemed to be difficult or of sensitive matter are labeled “impolite”
and thus, swept under the rug. Ignoring issues leads to festering of emotions, eventually leading to strong biases and actions harmful to the disenfranchised. These processes occur not out of a single incident but rather gradually and insidiously over time. “Social practice” art advocates for the inclusion of such topics in the art process, thus creating a dialogue and ameliorating the polarizing nature of difficult societal subjects. Through the context of environment, migration and borders, mental health, and feminism, art is a powerful tool to raise awareness and create a better world for all of us.

    ミクストメディア、パフォーマンス＆ビデオアーティストのアリソン・ボードリーは、ゴミやリサイクルショップから回収された美容器具やフィットネスに関連する拾得物を画材として使用している。彼女はこれらの物をスタジオに持ち帰り、形や機能を変えて、女性の体に対する世間の認識に疑問を投げかけるパフォーマンスの中で活用する。昔の女性の服と時代遅れのフィットネス器具を相互作用させるパフォーマンスの中で、彼女は、女性への過去の社会的期待、政治的問題、そして伝統的な役割を担うことへの強制が、残念ながら世界中の女性がいまだに直面している問題であることを示している。彼女のパフォーマンスはしばしば不条理に耳障りであり、人間の生来の意味への欲求と世界の卑しい無関心との間の葛藤を検証している。ボードリーは不条理をフェミニストのレンズを通して捉え、ユーモアを戦略として用いることによってフェミニズムと平等な権利に関する会話を始めさせるきっかけを作っている。

  • Allison Beaudry

    Allison Beaudry, a mixed-media and performance and video artist, employs found objects related to beauty maintenance and physical fitness scavenged from trash and thrift stores as art materials. She takes these objects back to her studio and changes their form and function to utilize within performances that question the perception of female bodies. By utilizing clothes of years past and interacting with obsolete items within performance, she illustrates how the societal expectations, political issues, and emphasis on traditional gender roles of yesteryear are unfortunately issues women still face around the world. Her performances are often absurdly jarring and examine the conflict between the innate human desire for meaning and the world’s abject indifference. Beaudry views absurdism through a feminist lens and uses humor as a strategy to open a conversation regarding feminism and equal rights.

  • ヨシミ・ハヤシ

    ヨシミ・ハヤシは、学際的で、作品過程の一環として地理、地域、地形、コミュニティ、歴史などを考慮するサイトスペシフィック・アーティストであり、Mira Costa Collegeの美術教授である。彼は幼い頃に日本から移住し、現在はカリフォルニアを故郷と考えている。彼は美術の修士号と心理学の理学修士号を持っている。ハヤシは様々な媒体で活動し、大規模なインスタレーションやサイト対応の作品を制作している。最近の作品では、国家と人々の物理的・心理的な境界に疑問を投げかけている。アメリカに帰化した彼の作品には、移民問題が登場する。こうした話題に加えて、ハヤシは社会問題と環境問題を統合するための創作プロセスも広げている。彼は非営利の芸術団体Landmarks of Art (LOA) を創設し、土地や場所に基づくプロジェクトを組み込むことに重点を置いて、非伝統的な展覧会の手段に焦点を当てている。LOA美学研究ステーションはカリフォルニア州のアンザ・ボレゴ砂漠にある63ヘクタールの土地である。この土地の主な焦点は、創造的なアイデアの大規模な実験を可能にすることである。芸術家や思想家もこの拠点に招かれ、アイデアを練ったり、作品を作ったり、オープンな対話を行ったりする。LOAはドイツ、オーストラリア、そして全米から芸術家を受け入れてきた。

  • Yoshimi Hayashi

    Yoshimi Hayashi is a multi-disciplinary, site-specific artist and professor of art at MiraCosta College. He moved from Japan at an early age and now considers California his home. He has a Masters of Fine Art and a Masters of Science degree in Psychology. Hayashi works in varied mediums and creates large scale installations and site-responsive works. His recent work questions the physical and psychological borders between nations and people. As a naturalized citizen of the United States, issues of immigration play out in his work. In addition to such topics, Hayashi has also expanded his creative process to integrate societal issues with environmental concerns. He created a non-profit art organization, Landmarks of Art (LOA), which focuses on non-traditional avenues for exhibitions with an emphasis on incorporating land/place-based projects. The LOA aesthetic research station is a 157 Acre (63 hectares) of land in the Anza Borrego Desert of California. The main focus of the land is to allow for experimentation of creative ideas on a large scale. Artists and thinkers are also invited to residencies on the land to formulate ideas, create work and have open dialogue. LOA has hosted artists from Germany, Australia and all over the United States.
